An illustrious son of Dr. S. Joseph, this young orthopaedic consultant completed his undergraduation at Thanjavur Medical College in the year 1998. He then completed his post graduation D.Orth in Madurai Medical College in the year 2002. He then went over to the UK, to complete his higher studies and training in Orthopaedics at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore, London, and obtained his M.Sc. Orth. Degree with distinction from the prestigious University College London, which was recently recognized as the fourth best university in the World by the prestigious Times magazine, having contributed not less than 21 nobel laureates to the world community.

His academic interest is amply represented by the fact that he won the Dr. Subramanyam Gold medal for basic research at the Tamil Nadu Orthopaedic Association conference in the year 2002, held at Coimbatore for his work on the vascularity of club feet. He subsequently has presented multiple papers at multiple state level conferences. In the last five years, he has presented three major papers at the prestigious Indian Orthoaedic association conferences on topics such as the open reduction and internal fixation of complex acetabular fractures, complicated total hip replacements, and on his thesis topic in the UK studying the bone mineral density changes after total hip replacements with three different cemented design concepts – a randomized controlled trial. All the papers were well received

He was the first in this entire region to start joint replacement surgeries on a regular basis since his return from the UK. He has done a host of complicated reconstructions of joints in difficult primary total joint replacement cases. He was also the first in this entire region to start surgical fixation of acetabular and pelvic fractures on a regular basis. Also, he was the first in this entire region to start arthroscopic reconstruction of the cruciate ligaments in the knee. He revolutionized trauma care in this region, especially with regards to compound open bone fractures by being the first surgeon to start primarily rotating muscle flaps to cover open tibial fractures and doing primary internal fixation of open fractures, with an infection rate post op of close to 0%. He also introduced mini-incision femoral and tibial nailing procedures and introduced closed nailing of femoral fractures in this region for the first time. He also introduced newer spinal procedures like PLIF for spinal lysthesis in spine surgery.

He has now added to the list of firsts to his credit by being the first doctor from this entire region to get an international scientific publication made in an international peer reviewed journal by publishing a rare genetic disorder from a family from this region, in collaboration with the Department of Histopathology at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital and the University College London. This condition had been diagnosed differently by multiple centres in India until genetic research was finally done in the UK, at the alma mater of Dr. Leo Joseph – namely – The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore.

Being young, energetic, and charitable, he has now joined this institution and has dedicated his services and expertise to the people of this region.
